Adani crisis sparks protests by Oppposition and arrests; sell-off losses top $110 bln

The crisis engulfing the Adani group intensified on Monday as dozens of members India’s main opposition party were detained by police during protests, and parliament was suspended again due to disruptions over the saga.
Adani shares continued their freefall, with the conglomerate’s cu-mulative market value loss topping $110 billion.

For the latest headlines, follow our Google News channel online or via the app.
The crisis was triggered by US-based short-seller Hindenburg Re-search’s January 24 report that accused the Adani group of stock manipulation, unsustainable debt, and use of tax havens.
The Adani group, one of India’s top conglomerates, has rejected the criticism and denied wrongdoing in detailed rebuttals, but that has failed to arrest the unabated fall in its shares.
In New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, a Mughal-era observatory that dou-bles up as a protest site for all causes, protesters held up banners and shouted slogans against Adani group’s billionaire founder Gautam Adani. Some broke through barricades, forcing the police to detain them.
Hundreds of members of the Congress party gathered to protest across the country, including outside several offices of state-owned insurer Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and State Bank of India (SBI), both of which have exposure to Adani group companies.
At Jantar Mantar some members burnt a suitcase with an SBI logo on it.
Both houses of India’s parliament were adjourned on Monday, the third consecutive day, amid sloganeering and demands to launch an inquiry.
In the brutal fallout of Hindenburg’s report, Adani group flagship company Adani Enterprises Ltd was forced to abandon a $2.5
billion share sale last week, and group chairman Gautam Adani lost his crown as Asia’s richest person and slipped down the glob-al rankings of the wealthy.
Gautam Adani and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi are from the same state. Adani has denied allegations by Modi’s oppo-nents that he had benefited from their close ties, and Modi’s gov-ernment has denied allegations of favoring Adani.

Credit ratings warnings

The stock market rout triggered a series of credit ratings warnings on Friday with Moody’s saying the group may struggle to raise capital, and S&P cutting its outlook on two group companies.
Even attempts by regulators and the government to calm spooked investors do not appear to be working.
The Reserve Bank of India said on Friday the country’s banking system remains resilient and stable. India’s market regulator said on Saturday the country’s financial markets remain stable and continue to function in a transparent and efficient manner.
SBI said on Friday it was not concerned about the exposure to the Adani group, but further financing to its projects would be "evalu-ated on its own merit."
India’s divestment secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey told Reuters on Friday that LIC shareholders and customers should not be con-cerned about its exposure to the Adani group.
Shares of Adani Enterprises sank 9.6 percent on Monday, taking its market capitalization losses to nearly $28 billion since the re-lease of the short-seller’s report.
Adani Transmission Ltd dropped 10 percent, while Adani Green Energy Ltd, Adani Total Gas Ltd, Adani Power, and Adani Wilmar fell roughly 5 percent.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone was the only stock to buck the trend, rising 1.2 percent.

Saudi Fund for Development Provides $100 Million Development Loan for the Rogun Hydropower Project

The Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) Chief Executive Officer, H.E. Sultan Al-Marshad, signed a new development loan agreement with the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Kahhorzoda Fayziddin Sattor, through which SFD is contributing $100 million USD to fund the Rogun Hydropower Project, a landmark initiative that will enhance energy,
food, and water security, and foster sustainable development in the country. The signing was attended by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the Republic of Tajikistan, H.E. Waleed Al-Reshiadan, and the Ambassador of Tajikistan to Saudi Arabia, H.E. Akram Karimi, alongside other officials from both sides. SFD’s development loan will help contribute towards a more sustainable and equitable food and water future for Tajikistan, while driving the country’s energy transition and climate resilience. The project aims to contribute to the national energy security and will help advance sustainable
development in the Republic of Tajikistan, by providing the renewable electricity supply to meet local demand and expand electricity production domestically and regionally, producing 3600 MW of energy. The loan agreement will also finance the construction of a 335-meter-tall dam, which will enhance irrigation capabilities and bolster agricultural activities across the country. Additionally, the project will improve flood protection through the construction of four hydraulic
tunnels for diversion and drainage. It will also provide clean and drinkable water to people through desalination, and help advance socio-economic development, by creating both direct and indirect jobs.
Importantly, this project also supports the realization of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); specifically, SDG 2, Zero Hunger, SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 7, Affordable and Clean Energy.
On this occasion, the CEO of SFD, H.E. Sultan Al-Marshad, said: “Today’s signing marks a major milestone in our shared journey towards a more sustainable future. With this landmark development loan, SFD is not just supporting Tajikistan’s energy future, but also its sustainable development and the well-being of its people. The Rogun Hydropower Project is a beacon of
hope for a bright future that is powered by clean, renewable energy. It will propel Tajikistan towards environmental stewardship and prosperity.”
