CHENGDU, 28th July, 2023 (WAM) — The 31st International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games are scheduled to commence on Friday in Chengdu, in the southwestern province of Sichuan, China.
The Games Village, the athletes' hub throughout the event, offers a comprehensive range of services and facilities spread over approximately 800,000 square metres, reported People's Daily Online. It is equipped to house 11,000 individuals, providing accommodation, dining, fitness, commercial, and cultural services.
Deputy manager of the FISU World University Games Village media centre, Feng Ming, said the village apartments, formerly university dormitories, have been renovated as per FISU standards, each equipped with home appliances and independent bathrooms and surrounded by lush vegetation.
Hosting the FISU Games provides an opportunity to spotlight the host city's culture. A lineup of themed galas, art exhibitions, and immersive activities showcasing Sichuan's unique cultural heritage will be held daily in the village.
The Games Village has integrated green transportation and intelligent lifestyle technologies with nine intelligent services and products, including 3D scanners and cooling vests.
Currently, 45 competition and training venues for 18 sports have cleared acceptance inspections, ensuring that all facilities and services comply with international competition standards. The Games adhere to a principle of frugality and sustainability, with green construction materials and LED lights utilised for new venues. All venues have achieved two-star ratings under China's green building certification system.
Christopher Svensson, chairman of the Swedish University Sports Federation, expressed his anticipation, stating, "We believe that Chengdu is ready to hold a splendid FISU Summer World University Games. We are looking forward to this grand event where young people from the world demonstrate their talent in sports and learn from other cultures."
