AJMAN, 24th March, 2023 (WAM) — The Ajman Municipality and Planning Department launched a mangroves cultivation initiative in the Al Zorah Natural Reserve, which has successfully cultivated 31,000 mangrove seedlings in the first quarter of 2023, coinciding with an initiative of the “National Carbon Sequestration Project” announced during COP26 in Glasgow, UK.

As part of its efforts to implement the UAE's strategic initiative to achieve Net Zero by 2050, the National Carbon Sequestration Project aims to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030, at the national level.

Khalid Maeen Al Hosani, Executive Director of the Public Health and Environment Sector at the Department, said that the department has started implementing the initiative, in cooperation with several local and international partners, to realise the country’s strategic goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Qualified cadres from the department have assessed locations suitable for cultivating mangroves in the Reserve and drafted a plan to cultivate seedlings, he added.

The department is intensifying its efforts to protect natural resources and has cultivated 31,000 mangrove seedlings in the first quarter of 2023 in the Al Zorah Natural Reserve as part of an educational programme that includes bird monitoring and explaining the importance of mangroves, in cooperation with partners, students, community members and employees, he further added.
