The protests in Kazakhstan, sparked by the government scrapping a cap on fuel prices, have revealed some of the contrasts in the country's economy. The Central Asian republic has massive natural resources, and is a major exporter of oil, gas, coal and uranium. Despite this wealth, financial hardship is widespread.
