Turkey’s EU aspirations and Sweden’s NATO bid ‘are separate issues:’ US
The State Department said on Monday that Turkey’s aspirations to join the European Union should not be an impediment to Sweden joining the NATO military alliance, after the Turkish president linked the two issues.
“We think that they are separate issues,” State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the EU should open the way for Ankara’s accession to the Bloc before Turkey’s parliament approves Sweden’s NATO bid.
