DUBAI, 18th May, 2023 (WAM) – The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) marked the occasion of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day at its Dubai office, with the participation of Huawei, a prominent Chinese company, as well as UAE telecommunications service providers, government partners of TDRA, and various local and regional collaborators.
The annual celebration, observed on 17th May, aims to raise awareness about the potential benefits that the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) offer in bridging the digital divide. During the event, TDRA emphasised several key topics, highlighting the vast opportunities presented by telecom technologies and digital transformation to serve humanity.
In his opening speech, Mohammed Al Ramsi, TDRA's Deputy Director General for the Telecommunications Sector, expressed gratitude to the sector's partners for their active involvement in the celebration. He emphasised the sector's significance amidst today's technological advancements, stating, "The UAE has been, and will continue to be, at the forefront of countries supporting the telecommunications sector and digital transformation in the region and the world, in line with the directives of our wise leadership." Al Ramsi also highlighted the UAE's early affiliation with the International Telecommunication Union, the establishment of the first e-government, and the country's leading position globally in fiber to the home (FTTH), internet speed, internet usage, and other key indicators.
The ceremony featured an exhibition that offered insights into the future prospects of the global industry, exploring the path toward a comprehensive and sustainable digital world. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the role of ICTs in environmental preservation. The event also included several workshops conducted by experts from "Etisalat" and "du," as well as Huawei, focusing on new and upcoming technologies in fixed and mobile networks, with a special emphasis on 5.5G and the role of telecom and related technologies in achieving environmental sustainability.
