Gen Zers have new priorities for Ramadan, reveals AI-powered study by Sila Insights

Sila Insights, the Dubai-based AI-powered consumer intelligence company, unveiled the findings of The Ramadan Shift on Wednesday, a thought-provoking study that examined the changing lifestyle priorities of Gen Z and millennials during the Holy Month.

According to the study, Ramadan pursuits are becoming more individualistic, reflecting changing demographics, media consumption habits and lifestyle choices. This is underpinned by the finding that young Arabs now prioritise friendships over family gatherings and prefer gaming, sports and TikTok, to traditional habits such as watching movies and TV series.

Using proprietary AI-powered Arabic-native language processing, Sila Insights analysed Arabic tweets, Instagram posts and TikTok videos from across the Arab world, from Ramadan 2022 to date. In all, the sentiment, emotion, and dialect (considered a substitute for country of origin) of nearly 2 million online conversations using the word ‘Ramadan,’ in Arabic or English, were tracked. The posts had an estimated reach of more than 22 million people and 6.2 billion views.

Paul Kelly, CEO and Founder of Sila, said the study is one of the thought leadership initiatives by the company that highlights how its proprietary AI-powered consumer intelligence is disrupting traditional market research. “Our goal is to make insights and marketing in the Arab world more effective with deep Arabic consumer intelligence and influence. This will bring real value to big data and support brands with actionable insight to drive their growth across the region and beyond.”

He added: “The findings of our new study will help organisations and businesses connect more strongly with Gen Zers during the Ramadan season and guide tactical decisions such as media spending. When it comes to Millennials, they can address the financial responsibilities of celebrating Ramadan. But what really stands out, is the need to prioritise the quality of the Ramadan experience for all.”

The research also found that nearly three-quarters (71 percent) of post-Millennials appear increasingly nostalgic for Ramadan experiences of the past. They long for a stronger sense of community and to go back to Ramadan traditions.

Meanwhile, a majority (79 percent) of Millennials (aged over 30) worry about the financial pressures of celebrating Ramadan, such as the cost of eating out and gifting. Just over one in four (29 percent) of this cohort are likely to be nostalgic for the Ramadan of yesteryear.

Although their Ramadan priorities differ, Gen Zers and Millennials share the same passion for the values of Ramadan. More than two-thirds (69 percent) of their online conversations concern spirituality, with the rest being about stronger community connections during the Holy Month.

The most popular topics in the context of spirituality are practices such as dua’a (the offering of informal prayers and supplications), followed by religious obligations, such as the profession of one’s faith, the five obligatory prayers, performing zakat (alms), fasting and the Hajj pilgrimage.

Specific to the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Gen Zers (youth below the age of 30) prefer to spend more time with friends than at family gatherings, and increasingly enjoy video games, sports and TikTok. During the study period, the consumption of TikTok Ramadan posts rocketed to 5.17 billion, with each post generating more than 707,497 engagements.

Reflecting the rising popularity of TikTok, online conversations about watching TV series – a traditional Ramadan activity – are diminishing, especially among Gen Zers. TV is now the most popular conversation topic for Millennials in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Across all Ramadan posts, the predominant emotion was ‘excitement’, which was especially strong in the Emirati, Bahraini and Yemeni dialects. The study also found that conversations about Ramadan start long before the Holy Month, although peak TikTok views occur during the first week.

Sila Insights’ study resonates with the findings of the 14th annual ASDA’A BCW Arab Youth Survey, the largest study of its kind of the Arab world’s largest demographic, its over 200 million youth.

Last year’s survey found that nearly half (41 percent) of young Arabs aged 18 to 24 view religion as central to their identity, while nearly two-thirds (65 percent) believe preserving the region’s religious and cultural identity is more important than creating a more globalised society. The research also highlighted the growing popularity of TikTok, with the number of young Arabs saying they use the short-form video content platform more than doubling in three years.

Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest at ADIHEX 2024: A celebration of ancestral elegance

The Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) announce the return of the prestigious Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest, a unique initiative aimed at highlighting the significance of purebred hunting dogs and fostering a connection between the new generation and their rich ancestral heritage.
Under the esteemed patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler’s Representative in Al Dhafra Region and Chairman of the Emirates Falconers’ Club (EFC), this iconic event is scheduled from 31st August to 8th September, 2024, at ADNEC Centre Abu Dhabi, celebrating the blending of deep Emirati cultural traditions with cutting-edge innovation and technology across 11 diverse sectors.
A highlight of this year’s event is the Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest. One of the world’s oldest and most revered dog breeds, the Arabian Saluki stands as a symbol of wild hunting and desert traditions in the Middle East. Known for its grace, speed, and intelligence, this distinctive breed has been a faithful companion to the Bedouin people for over 5,000 years, serving as both a hunter and guardian. The Saluki’s agility and loyalty have made it an integral part of hunting and racing traditions, especially within the Arabian Peninsula.
The Arabian Saluki Centre was established in Abu Dhabi in 2001 alongside the Emirates Falconers’ Club, marking the first facility of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region and the Middle East, to revive the tradition of desert hunting using Saluki dogs, a cherished aspect of desert heritage.
ADIHEX was the first cultural event in the Arab region to honour the bond between Man and his loyal companion, which has been by our side for thousands of years. The Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest is a unique initiative designed to promote interest in purebred hunting dogs and to strengthen the new generation’s connection to their ancestral heritage and traditions and to serve as a testament to this unique bond.
With its origin steeped in history, this fascinating dog’s name is believed to be derived from the city of Saluk in Yemen or the Bani Saluk tribe. Renowned for its endurance and elegance, the Saluki can reach speeds up to 75 kilometres per hour, maintaining this pace over distances up to almost five kilometres. The breed is cherished for its unique physical characteristics, including a slender body, deep chest, long legs, and two distinct coat types: ‘Al Hoss’ (smooth) and ‘Aryash’ (feathery).
The Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest, held during ADIHEX, is more than a beauty pageant. It celebrates the essence of the Saluki by focusing on the dog’s personality, skills, reflexes, and sensory response. Unlike typical dog competitions, this contest evaluates the Saluki’s breed characteristics, behaviour, overall appearance, structure, hunting skills, and psychological traits. Judging criteria include the dog’s gait, head, eyes, mouth, ears, coat, colour, and general impression.
The Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest is an integral part of ADIHEX’s mission to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the UAE and the wider Arab world. This contest not only showcases the beauty and abilities of the Saluki but also plays a vital role in raising awareness about the importance of preserving traditional hunting practices and the Saluki’s role in them.
This year’s competition will feature four categories: ‘Smooth (Hoss) Males,’ ‘Feathery (Aryash) Males,’ ‘Smooth (Hoss) Females,’ and ‘Feathery (Aryash) Females.’ The event is scheduled to take place during ADIHEX 2024, and, per the rules, participants must ensure their dogs are healthy, microchipped, and vaccinated.
The Saluki’s enduring legacy is celebrated through this competition, which draws participants and spectators from across the region and beyond. It provides a platform for Saluki enthusiasts to connect, share their passion, and celebrate a breed that has remained virtually unchanged for millennia, reflecting the diverse hunting landscapes and traditions of the Middle East.
Aside from the alluring Arabian Saluki Beauty Contest, as the largest edition of ADIHEX to date, the 21st edition will showcase thousands of brands across 11 diverse sectors, offering a dynamic platform for new business opportunities and captivating audiences of all ages. This exhibition celebrates the thrill of an adventurous outdoor lifestyle, allowing visitors to explore falconry, hunting, equestrian sports, veterinary products, fishing and marine sports, environmental preservation, cultural heritage, arts and crafts, and the latest in technology and innovation across all the represented sectors.
