22nd Sharjah International Conservation Forum for Arabia’s Biodiversity wraps up workshops

SHARJAH, 10th February, 2023 (WAM) — The 22nd Sharjah International Conservation Forum for Arabia’s Biodiversity was a testament to the commitment of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah to safeguarding the natural world and ensuring its sustainability for future generations.

The Forum workshops were a success and brought together experts from across the region to discuss the latest advances in the field of genetics and its applications for conservation efforts.

Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of the Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA), commented, “It is essential that we bring together experts in the field of genetics and conservation to discuss the latest advances and find new ways to preserve and protect our biodiversity. Events like these are critical in raising awareness and inspiring action, and I am grateful to H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his patronage and support.”

The workshops included discussions on the use of genetic data to resolve taxonomic considerations and the introduction to animal biobank, as well as population monitoring and management in the wild, and a genetic diversity evaluation workshop. These events brought together leading experts in the field to share their knowledge, experiences, and insights in a collaborative and engaging atmosphere.

Dr Helen Senn, Head of the Conservation and science programmes at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland, said, “The future of our planet is dependent on studies and research like these. The impact of genetic analysis on wildlife conservation efforts is significant and cannot be overstated. It is my hope that these workshops will inspire future generations to continue the important work of preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainability.”

The organisers said the Forum proved the importance of genetics in preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainability.
