LONDON, 10th February, 2022 (WAM) — Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), today met with Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the UK House of Commons, at the headquarters of the British Parliament as part of his official visit to the United Kingdom (UK).
Both sides highlighted the cooperation and partnership between the UAE and the UK during the meeting, stressing their mutual keenness to boost their parliamentary ties and strengthen their coordination in areas of mutual concern.
Ghobash also highlighted the historic strategic ties between the UAE and the UK, which are based on a long history of mutual coordination and cooperation, and their keenness to establish the foundations of security and stability in the region.
He then affirmed the UAE's condemnation of regional interventions in the internal affairs of Arab countries, stressing his total respect for their sovereignty and noting the importance of countering such regional interventions, which hinder political processes and lead to humanitarian crises.
An FNC delegation headed by Ghobash attended the meeting.
Hoyle welcomed the visit of Ghobash and his delegation and noted its importance in enhancing the bilateral ties between the two countries.
Ghobash further highlighted the advancing relations between the two countries, most notably after the recent visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to the UK on 16th September, 2021, which led to the issuing of a joint communique, titled, "Partnership for the Future."
During the visit, long-term investment deals were signed in various strategic sectors.
Ghobash lauded the UK’s condemnation of the Houthi attacks on civilian facilities in the UAE, stressing that his country retains its right to respond to such terrorist attacks, which constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law.
He also stressed the importance of reinforcing their coordination in international parliamentary events, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) events, countering such terrorist attacks, supporting the UAE’s condemnation of the Houthis at regional organisations with UK Parliament representation, including NATO, and classifying the Houthis as a terrorist organisation.
Ghobash officially invited Hoyle to visit the UAE before the end of March 2022 and view the UK pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
