ABU DHABI, 1st May, 2023 (WAM) — A documentary jointly produced by India’s public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and Emirates News Agency (WAM) has highlighted “the highly successful” Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed by the UAE and India last year.
Doordarshan India (DD India), Prasar Bharati’s international news channel, broadcast today evening the documentary titled 'India-UAE Partnership: New Frontiers, New Milestones', on the occasion of the first anniversary of the UAE-India CEPA.
“The first year of CEPA has been highly successful for both countries and consolidated one of the most important international relationships,” Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade, said in the documentary.
“We have delivered not only for the UAE and India, but for the whole region. The impact on trade has been clear with non-oil trade growing 10 percent in 2022, surpassing US$49 billion. The indication in early 2023 show this [upward] trend is continuing,” he explained.
Al Zeyoudi also detailed the investment flows between both countries and impact of the CEPA on bilateral economic and trade relations, describing the agreement as a “key turning point in our economic stories and a global model for international collaboration.”
Piyush Goyal, Indian Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, said, “The entire story is about mutual trust and commitment.”
Emphasising the “wonderful relations between the top leaders of the UAE and India”, Goyal explained the potential of the bilateral economic and trade relations, supported by the CEPA, in the years to come.
Dr. Ahmed Al Banna, former UAE Ambassador to India, recalled his initial meetings with top Indian officials to gauge India’s appetite for the CEPA with the UAE. “Soon after there was a strong positive reaction from the Indian Government,” he revealed, adding the details of one of the fastest negotiations on a bilateral agreement and its impact on the relations.
Sunjay Sudhir, the Indian Ambassador to the UAE, pointed out the UAE’s CEPA with India as a “trendsetter” as it was the first one in a series of such agreements the UAE signed with many other countries.
“For us, it is a CEPA with a partner which is already our third largest trading partner and our second largest export destination. So, it is significant for us,” Sudhir stressed.
WAM has published the documentary on its website and social media channels. This joint effort is based on an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between WAM and Prasar Bharati for cooperation in wide-ranging areas.
