SCRF 2023 shapes minds of future generations with 1,658 activities by 512 guests from 66 countries

SHARJAH, 13th April, 2023 (WAM) — The much-anticipated 14th instalment of the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival will commence on 3rd May, 2023, at the Expo Centre Sharjah and conclude on 14th May, 2023.
This year's cultural extravaganza will bring together a programme with 512 guests from 66 countries. They are poised to deliver an impressive 1,658 engaging workshops and sessions and showcase their latest work in the children’s literary scene.
Themed "Train your brain," the 12-day event, organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), will feature exciting events, including the inaugural Sharjah Animation Conference and the second edition of the Booksellers Conference.
The esteemed event was unveiled during a press conference at the SBA headquarters, with the participation of several prominent figures, including Ahmed Bin Rakkad al Ameri, the Chairman of the SBA; Rashid Abdullah Al Obed, Director of the Sharjah Broadcasting Authority; Khoula Al Mujaini, General Coordinator of SCRF, and Mansour Al Hassani, Director of Publishers Services, SBA.
Mohammed Al Amimi, Vice President of Business Partnerships and Customer Service, ‘Etisalat by e&’ and other cultural luminaries and media representatives also attended.
Sharjah Animation Conference
SBA will organise the inaugural edition of the Sharjah Animation Conference from 3rd to 5th May, on the sidelines of the SCRF, which will be the first of its kind in the region. The event will be held in partnership with Italy's Bergamo Animation Days (BAD) festival. It will provide a platform for people to come together, exchange ideas, and create meaningful connections through 11 masterclasses, six workshops and three panel discussions and a vibrant professional agenda.
Booksellers Conference
The second edition of the Booksellers Conference, which brings together 383 book distributors, including 223 from 52 countries and 160 from 17 Arab countries, will showcase their latest offerings in the children’s literary scene. It will deliberate on the book distribution ecosystem’s realities and explore opportunities in new markets. Expanding on the hugely successful conference, this year it will also feature seminars and workshops catering to the booming industry.
Thoughts of Children Can Shape Our Future
Commenting on the 14th SCRF, Ahmed al Ameri said, “In the Emirate of Sharjah, under the vision of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and with the support and guidance of his wife, H.H. Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, we chose to invest our efforts in making awareness of the new generations a top priority, and the foundations of our long-standing cultural project with its local, Arab, and global dimensions.”
He added, “Our first goal and project is to provide children, adolescents, and youth with the tools of sound thinking and to open the doors of learning, skills acquisition, invention, and innovation for them. We are confident that what they will think will determine our fate and shape our future. That is why the new edition of the festival this year was under the slogan 'Train your brain' to complement the ongoing efforts to promote our children’s awareness, knowledge, and skills. We wanted to tell the world that the minds being shaped among us today are the first guarantee for all our aspirations and hopes.”
Media Messages Align With SCRF
Rashid Al Obed said, “Since the SCRF's inaugural edition in 2010, the authority has covered its activities and delivered its meaningful message to the world due to important goals of the festival that are focused on connecting children with books and honing their talents. The cultural event's benefits extend to include all members of the family who can participate in its activities and workshops.”
He added, “Our mission intersects with several aspects of the SBA's message in raising awareness and nurturing generations that are fond of books and love reading. We have prepared a comprehensive plan that ensures comprehensive coverage of various festival activities through live television and radio programmes, including a live broadcast of the opening ceremony.”
Amplifying Arab and Global Publishing Market
Mansour Al Hassani said, “The concordance of the Booksellers Conference with the festival presents a renewed occasion to amplify the Arab and global publishing market. It offers an exceptional prospect for the exchange of direct sales agreements between publishers and book distributors, featuring the participation of distinguished figures, experts, and specialists from the publishing realm.”
Al Hassani also revealed that the SCRF 2023 is hosting 141 publishers, including 93 Arab and 48 foreign publishers. The UAE tops the list with 77, followed by Lebanon with 12, alongside many others. Top participating countries include the United Kingdom, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Australia, India, Pakistan, Algeria, and Iraq.
Investing in Young Minds to Create Thriving Nation
Khoula Al Mujaini said, “The SCRF reflects Sharjah's commitment to investing in children because they are the ones who will shape the future. Investing in them is an investment in the prosperity and progress of our society; hence, the importance of this event, which we are keen on bolstering as an open space for children to express themselves and instil the love of books in them.”
Al Mujaini also formally announced the inaugural Sharjah Animation Conference taking place on the sidelines of the SCRF from 3rd to 5th May and offering an overview of the many animation-related activities happening in the two-day conference.
Range of Children’s Activities and Theatrical and Artistic Performances
The 12-day festival will be home to 1,658 activities, including 946 events by 25 guests from ten countries and a diverse workshops for children covering arts, sports, science, and technology. The festival will also host 136 theatre performances, roaming shows, acrobats and music concerts by 16 guests from 16 countries. The most notable include the comedy play “Akbar the Great Nahi Rahe”, and the children's show “Masaka Kids Africana” which again shows the attention to diversity by the festival.
Alone at Home – The Play
One of the SCRF's highlights in the upcoming edition is a play titled Alone at Home, produced by the SBA in collaboration with Nujum from the UAE and Kuwaiti Panther Media Production. The SBA production features Emirati actors Deema Ahmed, Mohammed Jumaa, Abdullah Nabil, Saud Al Zarouni, and Kuwaiti actors Hanadi Al Kandari, Shouq Al Hadi, Mohammed Al Haddad, Ahmed bin Hussein, Malak Abu Zeid, and Jana Alfailakawi.
The 14th SCRF will be hosting 68 guests, including artists, writers, and creators from 21 countries, who will lead a diverse range of panel discussions that shed light on some of the most critical issues facing the world today, and sessions focused on developing communication skills for children and nurturing their creative and intellectual skills and capabilities.
Some of the notable Arab names participating in the festival include Amal Farah from Egypt; Dr. Fadia Daas from Jordan; Mohannad Thabet Al Akoush from Syria; Samah Abu Bakr Ezzat from Egypt, and Mohammed Shaker Mahmoud Jiragh from Kuwait. International guests include Ross Welford, international bestselling author of children's fiction; Jasmine Farga, Jasmine Warga, International bestselling and award-winning author of children's and young adults' fiction; Ellie Robinson, author and multi-medal-winning swimmer; Timothy Knapman, International bestselling author of children's fiction; and Annie Oswald, Vice President of Books and Audio at FranklinCovey Co.
The festival's cultural activities include panel discussions that focus on some pressing issues facing the world today and sessions focused on developing communication skills in children and nurturing their creative and intellectual abilities.
Cookery Corner
The popular Cookery Corner returns this edition with more than 33 culinary activities presented by twelve renowned chefs from nine countries. The chefs taking part in the 14th edition of the SCRF include Ashia Ismail from New Zealand; Priyanka Naik from the US; Uma Raghuraman from India; Ana Ortins from Portugal; Fatina Al Daher; Balqis, and Widad Zarzour from Lebanon; Asia Othman from Morocco; Yasmin Abu Hassan from Jordan; UAE twins Meitha and Abdulrahman, and Anto Cocagne from Gabon.
Comics Corner
Children and youth will be able to explore the world of comics through more than 323 activities, including workshops, panel discussions, and a series of roaming shows led by 15 creatives from four countries. The most prominent activities at the corner include Acro Adventures and Ninja Tests, in addition to workshops and interactive activities showcasing 35 local talents and their works.
Social Media Station
The Social Media Station will be home to 72 activities led by influencers and content creators, including Wessam Qutob, Chef Faisal Al Khalidi, Azza Al Mughairy and Jamal Al Mulla, who will focus on the latest techniques for creating content on digital platforms and developing suitable content for target audiences.
Sharjah Children's Book Illustration Award
During the festival, the SCRF will also announce the 11th Sharjah Children's Book Illustration Award winners, which received an impressive 1,300 submissions from 280 participants representing 46 countries. In addition, 235 works by 85 artists have qualified and will compete for the top spots.
The festival's sponsors list includes “Etisalat by e&” who are the official sponsors, Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, the media partner, and Expo Centre Sharjah, the strategic partner.

Dubai Customs is launching a significant initiative to train and employ 80 new high school graduates as “Customs Inspectors.”in line with the vision of the Dubai government and contributing to the goals of the Dubai Economic and Social Agenda, along with the leadership’s commitment to invest in citizens and increase Emiratisation rates.
This initiative is part of the department’s commitment to enhance the participation of citizens
in the economic development process and to support the UAE Centennial 2071 Plan goals
by investing in the youth and equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to
keep pace with global changes. The department has allocated a vocational program in
customs inspection for candidates selected from Ru’ya Careers UAE 2024, providing them
with professional training for seven months both domestically and internationally before they
take up available positions. This initiative is part of the pioneering “Masar 33” program
designed to meet Dubai’s agenda goals by mobilizing all resources and development plans
to ensure the highest quality of life for citizens in the emirate. “Masar 33″aims to enhance
the competitiveness of Emirati talent through various initiatives, professional programs, and
scholarships, establishing Dubai Customs as a cornerstone for advancing the national
human development system, boosting its efficiency and productivity, and increasing its
participation in economic sectors to meet Dubai’s leading aspirations for the future.

Program Objectives:
The vocational program aims to nurture and train new high school graduates by enhancing
their professional skills in line with the Dubai government’s vision. It seeks to integrate
citizens into the labor market from early stages, ensuring their future success and
competitiveness. Additionally, it focuses on building the capabilities of customs inspectors on
scientific and advanced training foundations to address security risks and protect the
community and economy from customs evasion and smuggling, achieving a 100%
nationalization rate in customs inspection at Dubai Customs.

Active Participation:

H.E. Sultan bin Sulayem, DP World Group Chairman & CEO and Chairman of Ports,
Customs and Free Zone Corporation, stated that the organization is committed through its
various initiatives and programs aimed at training and qualifying citizens to actively
contribute to the success of the UAE’s national vision, which is fundamentally based on the
Emirati workforce. He praised Dubai Customs for diversifying its projects in line with the
Dubai government’s plan and its social and economic agenda, enhancing the
competitiveness of citizens in the labor market for both the public and private sectors under
an ambitious strategy to encourage and promote nationalization policies.

Attracting Citizens:
H.E. Dr. Abdulla Mohammed Busenad, Director General of Dubai Customs, emphasized that
the department provides a range of specialized programs at the highest levels to attract
young citizens and involve them in the development process. Through “Masar 33” which
aligns with the objectives of the Dubai agenda and the leadership’s vision for enhancing
nationalization in both the public and private sectors, the programs enable citizens to gain
knowledge, field experience, and technical skills necessary for joining the labor market
through the approved career path. He noted that the initiative to train recent high school
graduates in customs professions builds upon Dubai Customs’ previous achievements in
qualifying citizens and the positive results attained through a series of diverse programs
covering the most in-demand job sectors. The department remains committed to enhancing
the efficiency of citizens and providing them with the professional opportunities they seek,
reinforcing its commitment to supporting nationalization efforts in the UAE.

Four Pillars:
Mohammed Al Ghaffari, Executive Director, Human Resources Division at Dubai Customs,
announced the opening of applications for the customs inspector training program during the
Ru’ya Careers UAE 2024 and provided the link to the official Dubai Government Jobs
website. The program is designed around four main pillars: digital skills programs, behavioral
programs, customs science programs, and security programs, alongside practical training in
the department’s customs centers and external training in collaboration with strategic
partners, which includes a comprehensive professional guidance program. He stated, “The
programs provided by Dubai Customs are increasingly popular among young citizens,
confirming the success of the department’ efforts in attracting national talent to shape future
leaders in customs work through various academic and specialized professional paths. This
offers new graduates the opportunity to qualify for roles in Dubai Customs, with 80 vacancies
allocated for graduates of the customs inspector training program.”

DCO Secretary-General commends Global Digital Compact at Summit of the Future

Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the
Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), said that “the digital divide the world faces today is
multifaceted, encompassing gaps in digital intelligence, computing capabilities, gender, and
skills,” in a speech at the Summit of the Future held during UNGA79 in New York.
In her speech, delivered after the UN General Assembly adopted the & Pact for the Future’ and the
‘Global Digital Compact’, AlYahya warned that “The AI and computing divide represents a
significant barrier, as some nations advance rapidly in AI innovation and deployment, while
others struggle to keep pace.
At the same time, the gender digital divide continues to limit women’s access to technology and
opportunities, and the skills divide leaves many without the digital competencies essential for
success in a fast-evolving economy. If we do not address these interconnected challenges, we
risk leaving entire communities behind.”
AlYahya praised the Global Digital Compact for “lays out an ambitious roadmap for an
inclusive, open, sustainable, fair, safe and secure digital future for all,” emphasizing that “It is a
bold vision, but the real challenge is translating these goals, principles, objectives, and
commitments into action, especially as we strive to achieve the SDGs.”
AlYahya highlighted that “at the Summit of the Future, the DCO proudly launched the Digital
Economy Navigator (DEN), an innovative tool that provides detailed insights on digital economy
performance across 50 countries. This initiative is just one of the many ways we are turning the
principles of the Global Digital Compact into action.”
She explained that “while DEN is a vital resource, it is only the beginning. In the spirit of
networked multilateralism, we must foster collective efforts to the GDC’s ambitious goals,
objectives, and commitments. I call upon every country, organization, and individual to join
forces in this critical endeavor.”
The Digital Economy Navigator (DEN) evaluates digital economy performance through three
intersecting dimensions: Digital Enablers, Digital Business, and Digital Society. Within these
dimensions, 10 pillars synthesize and summarize key aspects of countries’ digital economy, and
use of digital technology application from 102 indicators gathered from respected secondary data
sources, in addition to proprietary survey data of more than 27,000 participants across the 50
countries.
In addition to the launch of the DEN, on the sidelines of UNGA, DCO signed an agreement with
the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) to enhance digital cooperation and accelerate
digital transformation across the world, to support efforts aimed at achieving the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
It also signed a memorandum of understanding with the League of Arab States (LAS) to
accelerate the inclusive and sustainable digital economy, enhance relations and exchange experiences and knowledge, and accelerate the process of digital transformation and economic development.
