Sultan bin Ahmed honours winners of ALECSO-Sharjah Award



SHARJAH, 18th December, 2021 (WAM) — Under the patronage of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and Supreme President of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended, on Saturday, a ceremony honouring the winners of the 4th edition of ALECSO-Sharjah Award for Language and Lexical Studies at Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi delivered the speech of the Ruler of Sharjah, in which he praised God and sent blessings to Prophet Muhammed, his kin, and kith. "We started this award four years ago in coordination with the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation to say ‘thank you’ to researchers in the matter of the Arabic language, and Arab academics and university professors in the Arabic language departments. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your great services toward the Arabic language," Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed quoting H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed pointed out that currently Arab intellectuals, undergo a hardship path. They need a helping hand, someone who appreciates their efforts and raises their morale. "Here we are extending our hands to you and will not leave you alone on the field, in gratitude and appreciation of your efforts and your persistent and constant endeavour to serve the Arabic language," His Highness the Ruler said.

He added, "Once again, the Award appears to all linguists in the world in its new form. I will not be exaggerating if I say: it is the continuous specialised Arab award that made its way to success four years ago, and the intellectuals await it every year with passion. In this year, 67 researchers and specialists were nominated for the award, despite the pandemic, yet the contestants' will and determination remained strong. The nominated researches in linguistics and lexicography were examined, and the arbitration resulted in four winners, two in linguistic studies, and two in lexical studies, and today you gather to honour them."

H.H. the Ruler of Sharjah expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the judging committees of senior scholars and those in charge of the Award.

He announced the Award’s axes for next year which are stylistic studies in the analysis of the Qur’anic discourse, in linguistics, and Specialized lexicography, in lexicology.

He concluded his speech by emphasising that the Arabic language is a trust, asking God Almighty to grant everyone success in fulfilling this trust.

Dr. Abdulmalik Al Murtad, Dr. Ma’moun Wajih, and Dr. Mohamed Shandoul expressed their gratitude and showed appreciation to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah for his limitless efforts and support regarding the Arabic language.

On the occasion, The poet Abdullah Al Shehhi delivered a poem in which he addressed the importance of the Arabic language, its cognitive and linguistic richness, and the challenges it faces.

After the speeches, the honouring ceremony took place where Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi honoured the winners of the award categories.

Dr. Shukri Mohamed Al Sadi won first place in the linguistic studies category, while the second place was won by Dr. Mohamed Abdelaziz Abdeldayem Al Rifai.

In the category of lexical studies, Dr. Mohammad Shandoul won first place, and Dr. Mohammad Abdelsabour got second place.

Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed presented the Award’s Shield of Honour to Dr. Abdulrahman Al Asmi, Director General of the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States.

The honouring ceremony was attended by: Jamal Al Tarifi, Chancellor of Al Qasimia University, Abdullah Mohammad Al Owais, Chairman of Sharjah Department of Culture, Dr. Khalifa Musabah Al Tunaiji, Chairman of the Holy Qur’an Academy, Ali Ibrahim Al Marri, Chairman of Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Centre, and Mohammed Hassan Khalaf, Director-General of Sharjah Broadcasting Authority, and Dr. Mohamed Safi Al Mosteghanemi, Secretary General of the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah, And several senior officials of institutions concerned with the Arabic language.

UAE Cabinet approves restructuring of Securities and Commodities Authority’s Board of Directors



DUBAI, 20th January, 2020 (WAM) — The Cabinet has approved a decision to restructure the Board of Directors of the Securities and Commodities Authority, under the chairmanship of Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa Al Hammadi.

The decision is part of developing the system and workflow in the federal government in support of the UAE’s vision, and enabling the Securities and Commodities Authority to perform its plans and roles in promoting the performance of the financial markets in the country, according to systems that lay the foundations for flexibility and legislative sustainability, as part of the country’s directives to support and develop highly efficient and flexible financial markets.

As part of its duties, the Board will work to strengthen and develop the legislative and administrative system for the financial markets in the country, and support the supervisory and regulatory systems in accordance with best practices, to consolidate the UAE’s stature and its global leadership in this field.

The three-year membership includes Dr. Ali Mohammed Bakheett Al Rumaithi, Board Member of Central Bank of the UAE; Dr. Abdulla Al Khatib, Assistant Dean for Research and Graduate Studies at the College of Law – UAE University; Alyazia Ali Saleh Al Kuwaiti, Executive Director-Upstream & Integrated Business at Mubadala Investment; and Faisal Yousef bin Sulaiten, Executive Director of the Economic Security Centre of Dubai, along with representative of the youth category to be nominated by the General Secretariat of the Cabinet.

WAM, Mexico media entities discuss media cooperation



MEXICO CITY, 20th January, 2022 (WAM) — A delegation from the Emirates News Agency (WAM) has discussed ways to enhance media cooperation with a number of media entities in Mexico.

The discussion took place during the delegation's visit, led by Mohammed Jalal Al Rayssi, Director-General of WAM, to Mexico, at the end of a tour to Latin America, which included Brazil and Colombia. This tour is part of WAM's efforts to partner with international media institutions.

During the tour, the delegation met with the officials of Cuartoscuro, a magazine that specialises in photography and press information, established in 1986. The two institutions discussed opportunities to enhance media ties and signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to exchange and share media content between them.

The delegation also visited the headquarters of TV Azteca, a Mexican multimedia conglomerate owned by Grupo Salinas. It is the second-largest mass media company in Mexico after Televisa and broadcasts its programmes to 13 countries. The two sides explored means to develop media cooperation, news exchange, and the group's participation in the Global Media Congress, an event that will be hosted by Abu Dhabi next November.

The WAM delegation also visited Canal 11, a Mexican educational television network with 1,500 employees, and one of the most famous channels nationwide and in Latin America, that is fully funded by the Mexican government. The widespread network's daily followers reach nearly 30 million viewers and 3 million followers in the United States of America.

Canal 11 focuses on the most critical world news, local news, and educational programmes for children. Both sides agreed to broadcast a weekly article about the UAE, with materials provided by WAM in Spanish.

The delegation also visited "El Universal", a famous Mexican newspaper established 100 years ago, which is considered one of the most essential content makers in the media sector with over 240 journalists worldwide. They agreed to sign an MoU to exchange news in light of the desire of the Mexican side to increase its news about the UAE.

Al Rayssi stressed the importance of this visit in exploring broader horizons to enhance media cooperation with Mexican media, which has a history full of professional achievements.

He added that WAM is looking forward to building strategic relations with media establishments in Mexico due to the continuous cooperation between the two countries.

WAM Director-General expressed his aspiration for the participation of the Mexican media in the Global Media Congress in Abu Dhabi next November. He added that the Congress will provide a significant platform for building partnerships and fostering ties between media institutions worldwide.

Al Rayssi concluded by thanking all officials from the UAE Embassy in Mexico, commending their efforts to provide all forms of support to the WAM delegation during its stay in Colombia, which played a crucial role in making the visit a success.

Foreign Minister of Pakistan affirms his country’s full solidarity with UAE



ISLAMABAD, 20th January, 2022 (WAM) — Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan, has received in his office Hamad Obaid Ibrahim Salem Al Zaabi, UAE Ambassador to Pakistan.

Qureshi expressed his strong condemnation and denunciation of the terrorist attack by the Houthi militia on civil facilities in the UAE. He considered the attack a threat to international peace and security, expressing regret for the civilian casualties, including a Pakistani citizen, due to the cowardly terrorist attack.

He added, "The UAE and Pakistan have solid historical relations, and we reiterate our full solidarity with the UAE in all the measures it takes to preserve the security and safety of its citizens and the sovereignty of its territories."

The Pakistani Foreign Minister also extended his sincere condolences to the families of the victims of this terrorist attack and his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.

In turn, the UAE Ambassador thanked the minister for the firm Pakistani position, condemnation and sincere solidarity with the UAE and its people with regard to this heinous attack, which is inconsistent with all international norms and laws.
